The VNK is small enterprise where in Sand Cement Bricks are produced using a small machine. The unit cost is Rs 1 lakhs and 8 persons working 8 hours can produce 800 bricks. These bricks are used by Indiramma Beneficiaries for their low cost houses.
Some VNKs also stock a lakh worth Centering materials and lease them to the housing beneficiaries who use it to slab their roofs.
Indiramma beneficiaries who are mostly SHG members have receive houses from the government of Andhra Pradesh as part of its ambitious housing program where in at least 35 lakhs house are to be built and delivered to the poor thus making it the largest housing program in the country. This massive housing program is being rolled out by AP State Housing Corporation.
The program to succeed requires continues supply of bricks, and centering material The availability of key ingredients bricks, and centering equipment being in short supply, it was decided to involve the organizations of the poor [VO] existing in the state to participate and make the program their own.
The Village organizations (VO) of the poor were approached to participate in setting up of Sand Cement brick units as well as leasing out centering material. The village level units were called the Village Nirmit Kendras to be owned and run by the VO.
The proposal was discussed by the district units of the poor (Zilla Samakhya) and 2000 VOs express their interest and paid Rs 15,000 as beneficiary contribution.
The VNK are in operation since a year and half.
